need for a new course or course changes IDENTIFIED

When qualified teaching faculty, academic administrators, transfer partners, PAC members, or other stakeholders identify the need for a new course or course changes,  a qualified faculty member is responsible to meet that need. The faculty member is responsible for submitting course learning outcomes and content on the Course Curriculum Outline (CCO). A current representative course syllabus is required with the CCO. The faculty representative is responsible to see the course proposal through SLCC’s established curriculum process.

analysis & implementation council (aic)

The first step in the SLCC Curriculum Process is the Analysis and Implementation Council (AIC). The purpose of AIC is to provide quality feedback on course and program proposals prior to the School Curriculum Committee. The AIC Council has representative from faculty, Office of the Registrar & Academic Records, Financial Aid, Graduation, Degree Audit, Catalog, Academic & Career Advising, Curriculum, Articulation, etc.... Each AIC member reviews each proposal from his/her area of expertise and, when combined, a thorough analysis of the proposal will be returned to the sponsoring faculty member and his/her academic administrators.

School Curriculum Committee

The AIC Chair returns the course evaluation to the sponsoring faculty member, Associate Dean, and Dean one week after submission to AIC. Each course proposal is discussed in the School Curriculum Committee. The proposal is vetted for academic rigor, course learning objectives, curricular needs, capacity, resource issues, and more. The Dean, as School Curriculum Committee Chair, documents how AIC input was addressed on the CCO. After approval at the at the School level, the Curriculum Technician acts on proposals based on the School Curriculum Committee decisions.

General Education Committee (if necessary)

If the course is seeking General Education designation, changing the General Education designation, or completing the 5-year General Education course review, the sponsoring faculty member must also complete the General Education Rationale  and present the course proposal to the General Education Committee. The CCO, General Education Rationale, and representative course syllabus will be evaluated according to the General Education philosophy and designations as outlined in the General Education Handbook.

Senate Curriculum Committee

The Senate Curriculum Committee is a subcommittee of the Faculty Senate which meets from September through May. This committee ensures sound curricular procedures are followed and evaluates course proposals for academic rigor with special attention given to the correlation between course learning outcomes and assessment of those outcomes. All course proposals are presented to the Senate Curriculum Committee as approval or consent items. Once the course proposal is passed by the Senate Curriculum Committee it is presented to the Faculty Senate.

Faculty Senate

All curricular proposals passed in the Senate Curriculum Committee are presented to the Faculty Senate by the Chair of the Senate Curriculum Committee. This is the final approval body for courses.

Catalog Entry and Banner programming

After approval by Faculty Senate, the course is programmed in Banner according to the details provided on the CCO.  The course is also added to the SLCC catalog and DegreeWorks. CCOs, representative course syllabi, and additional course curriculum documents are housed on the Curriculum SharePoint site.
