Colors

Using colors either for visual interest or to convey information, such as using red to mean stop, can cause documents not to be accessible. Many students who are color-blind often do not request accommodations for their disability, and blind students would not be able to see colors at all. Do not use color alone to convey meaning. Tips for using colors:

  • Choose colors for fonts that have a high contrast with the background for easier reading.
  • Black fonts on white background are a safe option. You can use Color Contrast Check to help you find the best contrast between the font color and the background color.
  • When using graphs, try adding labels to each section of the graph, instead of relying on color alone to convey information.
