Foundations of Inclusive Teaching

This self-paced online course introduces instructors to key concepts and principles for equitable and inclusive teaching. Participants explore strategies for reducing inequities in higher education that create barriers to learning for community college students. The course includes definitions, short readings, videos, reflective questions, teaching strategies, and other resources. Participants will complete a series of self-paced learning activities, record their teaching ideas in a notebook or teaching journal, and complete a formal reflection. Instructors who successfully complete all required activities receive a Foundations of Inclusive Teaching credential with a digital badge. Instructors are encouraged (but not required) to take this course before or immediately after completing the Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices online course. Adjunct faculty will be compensated 6 hours for the course.

Faculty Development will facilitate a discussion for faculty who have completed this course on November 15. Please visit Teaching & Learning Workshops for more information.

EITP Level 1: Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices Online Course

This online, facilitated course focuses on teaching practices that support learning and educational equity for community college students from diverse social, cultural, racial, linguistic, and educational backgrounds. Participants complete course development activities and work toward redesigning a course based on principles for effective, equitable, and inclusive teaching. Participants complete a short orientation and eight, 2-hour modules (one per week) with readings, videos, reflection questions, learning activities, and online discussions. At the end of the course, each participant submits a reflection and inclusive teaching action plan. A resources module provides instructors with ideas for future professional development activities. Instructors who successfully complete all required activities receive an Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices credential with a digital badge. Adjunct faculty will be compensated 16 hours for the course.

Registration for Spring Semester is now open.

EITP Level 2: Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices Faculty Learning Community

This facilitated online learning community builds on activities from the Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices Course. Participants learn about and apply principles for culturally responsive teaching as they work on assessing and improving a course (or set of courses). Learning community activities include reading a discussion book, engaging in online discussions, completing course development activities, reflecting on teaching, and documenting teaching practices through a professional ePortfolio page. The program also includes several live discussions through videoconferencing with alternative online activities available for instructors who can’t attend scheduled meetings. Instructors work together to think through complex issues related to supporting community college learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Participants should plan on spending one or two hours each week (about 16 hours across the semester) with the time commitment varying from week to week.

Instructors who successfully complete all required activities receive a Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices credential with a digital badge. Adjunct faculty will be compensated 16 hours for this learning community.

Registration for Spring Semester is now open.

EITP Level 3: Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Leadership Project

This self-paced, project-based program is for instructors and staff who have received the first two Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices (EITP) credentials. The purpose of the program is to help instructors a) continue their learning as equity-minded community college educators through individualized professional development, b) work toward leading or collaborating in efforts to improve student learning in their programs, and c) apply principles for educational equity to their fields of study. Participating instructors consult with program facilitators while working independently on designing and then implementing a substantial individual or collaborative project focused on equitable and inclusive teaching practices. After completing the project, participants share their work with colleagues in their fields of study. They also contribute to an equitable and inclusive teaching practices online resource for the SLCC community and document their work through a professional ePortfolio page. The time commitment for this program depends on the activities that an instructor chooses to complete. Participants should plan on spending about two hours a week for a semester project and one hour a week for work spread throughout the academic year.
